No. 1 Star: Mika Zibanejad, Ottawa Senators
Five minutes into the second period, the game appeared to be all but over for Ottawa as their opponents, the Vancouver Canucks, went up 3-0. The Sens went on to score 4 straight goals. Zibanejad participated in all 4, including this overtime game-winner by Erik Karlsson.
No. 2 Star: Kyle Palmieri, Anaheim Ducks
The Ducks become the first team in the NHL to hit the 40-point plateau thanks to this game winning snipe from Palmieri only 53-seconds in to OT.
No. 3 Star: Ben Scrivens, Edmonton Oilers
The netminder stopped 20 shots from San Jose. It doesn’t seem like much, but considering the team he had in front of him (i.e. the Oilers), he did pretty well at keeping the Sharks from getting pucks past him. The win snaps an 11-game losing streak by Edmonton. (Let’s hope Craig MacTavish doesn’t get injured trying to pat himself on the back for his press conference on Friday.)
Honorable Mention: Pavel Datsyuk earned a 3-point night (1 goal, 2 assists) in Detroit’s win over Carolina. There is a reason they call him ‘The Wizard’ …
… Bobby Ryan provided 3 assists in Ottawa’s comeback … Nail Yakupov scored his first goal in 11 games on the power play after a miscue by the Sharks …
… Ryan Getzlaf, playing without his BFF Corey Perry (out indefinitely with knee injury), assisted on 3 of the Ducks goals, 2 of which were on the power play … In the loss, Jacob Trouba and Andrew Ladd each had 1 goal, 1 assist for the Jets … Vancouver’s Radim Vrbata shows off against Craig Anderson …
Did You Know? Colby Robak became the 13th defenseman used by the Anaheim Ducks this season due an injury riddled d-corps. Robak was acquired earlier in the week from Florida.
Dishonorable Mention: Evander Kane was ejected for boarding Clayton Stoner, supplementary discipline might follow … Watch Derek Dorsett go balistic well after a tussle with Chris Neil ends and their being skated to their respective corners …
… Vancouver allowed 22 of Ottawa’s 45 shots on goal in the second period … Eric Staal inadvertently blocked teammate Justin Faulk’s shot near the end of the game and left the ice; he was seen on crutches afterwards.
