NHL Three Stars: Ducks defeat Marty, Penguins fired up after morning scrap, Price’s 200th win

No. 1 Star: Sidney Crosby, Pittsburgh Penguins

Maybe the Penguins should fight in practice more often if this is the kind of result they’re going to get. Sid had 4 helpers in the Penguins 6-4 win against Tampa Bay. Evgeni Malkin, Steve Downie, Kris Letang, and Andrew Ebbett all recorded 2-point nights. Crosby and Letang played catch to set up the game’s opening goal by Chris Kunitz:

No. 2 Star: Frederik Andersen, Anaheim Ducks

Andersen earned his 21st win of the season by making 39 saves against the St. Louis Blues. He was so good, the pucks stopped themselves when he couldn’t get there in time.

No. 3 Star: P.K. Subban, Montreal Canadiens

The defenseman assisted on all 3 goals by the Canadiens against the Devils. His generosity with the puck and defensive efforts in his team-leading 27:28 TOI helped to get Carey Price to his 200th career win.

Honorable Mention: Michael Bournival scored 2 goals for Montreal … Roberto Luongo grabbed his 68th career shut-out in the Panthers 2-0 victory over Buffalo … Matt Belekesy beat Martin Brodeur to score his team high 5th game-winning goal of the season …

James van Riemsdyk is a bad ass. His team was losing late in the third, he took a puck to the face – which broke his nose – he left the ice for a few minutes before returning; the Leafs still lost, but talk about dedication … Colorado beat Edmonton in the shoot-out in part to this fancy Matt Duchene goal …

… John Tavares scored both goals in the Islanders 2-1 win versus Calgary … Kyle Okposo was credited with assists on both of Tavares’s goals … Cam Ward made 23 saves as Carolina beat Philadelphia 2-1 … Mikko Koivu assisted on the Jared Spurgeon’s game winning goal and scored a goal himself to ice the 3-1 win for Minnesota against Toronto.

Did You Know? This is a stat kept in the NHL…

Dishonorable Mention: It was not a good night for referee Mike Leggo (link warning: barf forthcoming) … It could have been a disastrous night for Claude Giroux … It goes from bad to worse in Toronto …

… Ben Bishop was pulled after giving up 3 goals on 10 shots after only 13:39 of the first period … Anaheim’s Sami Vatenen and Minnesota’s Ryan Sutter both received delay of game penalties, in separate games, for sending the puck 200 feet up and out of the rink … Let’s all point and laugh at Barrett Jackman as he’s checked by a ghost …

… New Jersey’s Peter Harrold took a stick to the mouth in the first period and did not return … Montreal’s P.A. Parenteau was on the receiving end of a Tom Sestito hit that ended his night early …
