No. 1 Star: Jakub Voracek, Philadelphia Flyers
Voracek, along with Claude Giroux, powered the Flyers to their seventh straight win with their four and three point nights, respectively. Philly came back from two goals down twice in the game before finally beating the Edmonton Oilers, 6-5. The Flyers scored three goals in 72 seconds to send the Wells Fargo Center into a frenzy.
No. 2 Star: Derek Ryan, Carolina Hurricanes
In the second game of back-to-backs, the ‘Canes needed only 3 goals on 18 shots to beat the Los Angeles Kings. Ryan scored two of the three goals for Carolina. His second of the night was a shorthanded beauty that started with a behind the back pass.
No. 3 Star: Corey Schneider, New Jersey Devils
Schneider was the goalie on the losing end of the ledger Thursday night. The Devils allowed five goals from the Montreal Canadiens but it could have been much worse. The Habs threw 49 shots on goal with 24 of those coming in the third period.
Honorable Mention: Since returning to the lineup, Taylor Hall has 7 points in four games. Brendan Gallagher, Torrey Mitchell, Phillip Danault, and Andrew Shaw each skated away with two points … Mark Scheifele scored his 14 goal of the season in his first game back. The New York Rangers would eventually prevail over the Winnipeg Jets after Kevin Hayes scored the game winning goal with 1:09 remaining in the third … Connor McDavid scored a power play goal and then had some choice NSFW words for the Flyers:
… The Colorado Avalanche snapped a six game losing on the back of a 29 save performance from Calvin Pickard. The goals Pickard gave up were the 17 and 18 of the season to the nearly unstoppable David Pastrnak … Anders Lee scored two goals against the St. Louis Blues for the 3-2 win. The goal of the game came from John Tavares. He switches hands and goes top shelf. Have mercy.
… Ryan Miller had a stellar 38 save effort against the Tampa Bay Lightning before tweaking something and leaving the game with 6:02 left and the score 5-1. Jack Skille and Jayson Megna scored two goals each for Vancouver … The Dallas Stars got the offensive explosion game they were looking for and it came against the Nashville Predators. Jamie Benn picked up the 200 goal of his NHL career plus 2 assists for a 3 point night. Jason Spezza also netted a goal and 2 assists … Sidney Crosby scored goal No. 18 on the season in the Pittsburgh Penguins 5-1 thumping of the Florida Panthers … The Calgary Flames won their fifth straight game after Dougie Hamilton scored in OT to beat the Arizona Coyotes. Max Domi and Garnet Hathaway had one helluva scrap. Domi reveled in the blood dripping down his face. The team said he’s day-to-day with an upper body injury.
Dishonorable Mention: Carey Price would like Kyle Palmieri to stay out of his crease and punches him repeatedly with his blocker so he doesn’t forget … For what it’s worth, Oskar Klefbom was a minus-4 and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was minus-4 … Ben Bishop did not play the third period after allowing 4 goals on 20 shots. Rough night for Alex Killorn (minus-4), Nikita Kucherov (minus-4), Vladislav Namestnikov (minus-3), Jason Garrison (minus-4), and Andrej Sustr (minus-3) … Pekka Rinne got the hook after 4 goals on 18 shots in 25:47 TOI … Panthers interim-head coach Tom Rowe is now 1-2-3 behind the bench after taking over for the fired Gerrard Gallant … Tough night for Oliver Ekman-Larsson. He was boarded in the first period and pulled by the concussion spotter. He took an inadvertant puck to the face in the second that required three stitches. He finished the game because he’s a hockey player! Lance Bouwma hit OEL and Ryan White jumped in to defend his teammate’s honor. White was tossed from the game with misconduct, fighting and instigating penalties.
