Draisaitl fined maximum amount for spear on Tierney

After spearing Chris Tierney in the ‘special purpose’ during Tuesday night’s 7-0 thumping by the San Jose Sharks, Leon Draisaitl escaped the swift arm of NHL justice with only a scuff mark.

Following Draisaitl’s Wednesday hearing with the Department of Player Safety it was decided the Edmonton Oilers forward only required a fine for his participation.

From the NHL:

Edmonton Oilers forward Leon Draisaitl has been fined $2,569.44, the maximum allowable under the Collective Bargaining Agreement, for spearing San Jose Sharks forward Chris Tierney during Game 4 of the teams’ First Round series in San Jose on Tuesday, April 18, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

The incident occurred at 13:44 of the second period. Draisaitl was assessed a major penalty for spearing and a game misconduct.

The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

In the game itself, Draisaitl was assessed a five minute major and was tossed from what would end up being a dumpster fire for his team.

Fowler out 2-6 weeks; GM Murray upset with lack of punishment

Anaheim Ducks GM Bob Murray feels like his team dodged a bullet. Cam Fowler is expected to miss two to six weeks with a sprained knee. It’s a big gap of time, but the team is expected to know which one it’s closer when Fowler is re-examined next week.

“When I saw the hit, your heart goes in your mouth,” said Murray. “We may have gotten a little bit of a break.”

He’s not kidding.

The hit on Fowler by Mark Giordano appeared to bend the defenseman’s knee sideways.

Malgin leaves game after hard hit from Zacha (Video)

The Florida Panthers went down a forward after Denis Malgin took a hard check by Pavel Zacha into the boards.

Zacha was assessed a five-minute major penalty by the officials, but he was not kicked out of the game.

With all hits of this nature, the Department of Player Safety will take a look to see if supplemental discipline is necessary.

Borowiecki slams Toffoli face-first into glass (Video)

Mark Borowiecki knew the second after he made contact with Tyler Toffoli he would have to answer for what he did.

Toffoli drops immediately to the ground. As the Kings encircle Borowiecki, the Ottawa Senators defenceman throws off his gloves and prepares to defend himself.

As for Toffoli, he got to his feet and skated to the bench. He went directly to the locker room for concussion evaluation.

Clutterbuck on Williams: collision or late hit? (Video)

There is one thing we know for sure about the hit above: Justin Williams got absolutely rocked by Cal Clutterbuck on Thursday night.

The contact between the two players was well after Williams seemed to have touched the puck. Yet the question that could be bandied about is whether or not Clutterbuck collided with Williams or went out of his way to hit him, especially when it comes to any supplemental discipline.

Williams appears to be caught puck watching as he turns it over at center ice. As he skates forward, Clutterbuck comes in and blasts him.
