Sidney Crosby, Mike Sullivan contradict on concussion evaluation

When Sidney Crosby did a header at full speed into the end boards, the collective hockey universe gasped as the superstar appeared slow to gather himself.

Crosby went to the bench, and stayed there briefly. He came back out to finish the period.

It was clear to anyone with functioning eyeballs that the concussion spotters did not do their intended job here, despite their expanded protocols established by the NHL.

Crosby returned to play the rest of the game. It’s not like the Pittsburgh Penguins would risk the health of their most valuable resource; one who missed Game 4 due to a concussion. Right?

Andersen leaves game after Sestito makes contact with head (Video)

That loud, guttural scream you heard from the greater Toronto area came as Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender Frederik Anderson lay down in the fetal position on the ice.

In the second period, Andersen comes just beyond the top of his crease. Sestito appears to attempt to set a screen as the Penguins take a shot from up high. The butt of Sestito makes contact with the head of Andersen causing the netminder’s head to whip violently to one side.

Sestito earns four game suspension for boarding Enstrom (Video)

The Department of Player Safety suspended Tom Sestito for four games after boarding Toby Enstrom in a raucous first period of Wednesday night’s game. He will forfeit $12,777.76 in salary. This is Sestito’s first suspension since 2011.

Sestito was called up by the Pittsburgh Penguins to take the spot of an injured Patric Hornqvist. The game was the ninth for Sestito this season and first since Nov. 16.

In a scant 1:02 TOI versus Winnipeg, Sestito racked up 20 minutes in penalties and was tossed from the game after boarding Enstrom.

Cody Eakin annihilates Henrik Lundqvist with hit to head (Video)

The greater Manhattan area held their collective breath Thursday night as Henrik Lundqvist was down on all fours on the ice.

Lundqvist, in his first game back after sitting the last four, was puck handling in the trapezoid. With his head down, King Henrik had no idea that Cody Eakin was about to shake his brain in his skull.

Eakin’s shoulder makes direct contact with Lundqvist’s head and blasts the helmet off the netminder.

Borowiecki slams Toffoli face-first into glass (Video)

Mark Borowiecki knew the second after he made contact with Tyler Toffoli he would have to answer for what he did.

The Los Angeles Kings forward was playing the puck against the boards with his head down the entire time. Borowiecki comes flying in and forcefully drives Toffoli’s body into the glass.

Toffoli drops immediately to the ground. As the Kings encircle Borowiecki, the Ottawa Senators defenceman throws off his gloves and prepares to defend himself.

As for Toffoli, he got to his feet and skated to the bench. He went directly to the locker room for concussion evaluation.

Should Pastrnak be suspended for hit to Girardi? (Video)

It’s been a tough start to the season for Dan Girardi.

The New York Rangers defenseman missed the first three games with a groin injury. On Wednesday night versus the Boston Bruins, he appears to have escaped his fourth game of the year without a concussion.

At 10:55 of the second period, Girardi reaches up in an attempt to catch the puck in the air. It bounces off his glove and behind him. He starts to spin around in the direction of the puck, but the direction he chose to spin into is right in the way of the on rushing David Pastrnak.

Pastrnak turns and his shoulder makes direct contact with Girardi’s head. The Bruins’ forward’s skates look as if they come off the ice right before or simultaneously to the contact with Girardi.

MacArthur concussed in Senators camp, fight breaks out (Video)

Even during training camp, things can get heated as bubble players compete for a roster shot.

At Ottawa Senators camp, defenseman Patrick Sieloff – who was acquired in the offseason for Alex Chiasson – made contact with the head of Clarke MacArthur in a play along the boards.

MacArthur immediately went to the ice clutching his head.

Bobby Ryan, who is not known for being much of a fighter, went directly after Sieloff. The officials struggled to break the two of them up. Minutes later, Chris Neil came over to exchange words with Sieloff.

MacArthur was able to make if off the ice with the help of teammates.

Kesler ejected for boarding in USA, Canada exhibition (Video)

The hate between the United States and Canada runs deep, even in meaningless exhibition games during the warmup to the World Cup of Hockey.

Ryan Kesler proudly wears the red, white and blue for Team USA. He shows that these colors do not run … but they do get ejected.

In the second period of the first World Cup exhibition game for both squads, Team Canada defenseman Shea Weber goes back to retrieve the puck along the end boards. He doesn’t appear to touch the puck before Kesler comes barreling in and flattens the much larger (and angrier) Weber against the boards.

Ryan Callahan boards Kris Letang; suspension coming? (Video)

We wondered how physical the series would get between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

It took only 2:50 to find out as Ryan Callahan boarded Kris Letang in the first period.

There was confusion at first as to what exactly Callahan’s penalty (or penalties) would be.

He received a five minute major for boarding. The assumption that he was going to be tossed to, but he was kept in the game.

We don’t know the reason why he didn’t receive a game misconduct when it was clear he boarded, and laid an elbow into the back of Letang’s head. Some surmised that the officials determined that Letang was not injured to the point of warranting Callahan’s expulsion.
